Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.73 square miles (113.26 km2), of which 42.61 square miles (110.36 km2) is land and 1.12 square miles (2.90 km2) is water,[4] making Battle Creek the third largest city in Michigan by area, and one of only three incorporated municipalities in the state over 40 sq mi (100 km2) in size. -- Wikipedia

There is a total population of 57,438 people, including 23,067 households. The racial/ethnic composition (based on the head of household) is 74% (17,004) White, 18% (4,130) African American 4% (895) Hispanic, 2% (477) Asian, and 2% (561) not reported. There are 4,357 children ages 0-4, 5,207 children ages 0-5, and 7,678 children ages 0-8. A total of 7,583 family households have kids, and 3,913 (52%) of these have an unmarried head of household. Based on data gathered between 2006 and 2010, 1,917 families with kids (14%) lived below 100% of poverty, and 1,522 (79%) of these were single parent families. 35% of children under 6 years old lived below 100% of poverty; 62% lived below 200% of poverty. -- See attached Report
